DIY Mason Jar Wall Sconce (Farmhouse-to-Modern • 2025 Guide)

There’s something timeless about mason jar lighting. It blends rustic charm with clean modern warmth — the perfect balance for 2025 interiors. Whether your home leans farmhouse, minimalist, Scandinavian, or boho, a mason jar wall sconce adds a handcrafted glow that feels personal and inviting.

This project is beginner-friendly, budget-friendly, and incredibly customizable. After making several versions for clients and my own home, this is the most polished method I recommend.

Let’s get started.

Materials & Tools

Materials including mason jar, wood board, fairy lights, hooks, and screws for a DIY wall sconce.

Simple, affordable materials — most can be sourced from any hardware store.

Materials:

  • 1 Mason jar (clear or frosted)

  • Wooden board (common size: 30 × 12 cm)

  • Metal hook or rustic “shepherd hook.”

  • Fairy lights (battery-operated)

  • Sawtooth hanger (for mounting)

  • Wood stain or matte paint

  • Screws + wall anchors

Tools:

  • Drill

  • Screwdriver

  • Sandpaper

  • Cloth for staining

Step 1 — Cut & Prep the Wooden Board

Hands sanding a wooden board for a DIY mason jar sconce.

Smooth edges and even surfaces give the sconce a high-end look.

Choose a board that fits your wall and jar size.
Sand it thoroughly to remove rough edges and open the wood grain before staining.

Blogger tip:
Lightly rounding the edges creates a softer, more modern profile.

Step 2 — Stain or Paint the Wood

Staining a wooden board with warm walnut color for a mason jar sconce.

Warm wood tones pair beautifully with clear glass and soft lighting.

Trending 2025 finishes:

  • Warm walnut

  • Weathered “coastal” grey

  • Natural matte oak

  • Black matte for modern interiors

Allow it to fully dry before moving to the next step.

Step 3 — Install the Hook

A strong hook is important to support the jar safely.

Mark the center point near the top of your board.
Drill a small pilot hole → screw in the hook firmly.

Safety note:
Don’t overtighten — you don’t want to crack the wood.

Step 4 — Add the Mason Jar

Make sure the jar hangs evenly for a clean visual balance.

Hang the jar from the hook by its metal ring.
Make sure it sits level.

Optional:
Add a bit of jute rope for a rustic touch.

Step 5 — Insert the Fairy Lights

Warm fairy lights placed inside a mason jar for a wall sconce.

Fairy lights create a warm, ambient glow — perfect for night-time mood lighting.

Use battery-operated LED fairy lights.
Hide the switch behind the board or inside the jar (depending on design).

Warm-toned lights feel the coziest and most modern.

Step 6 — Install the Sawtooth Hanger & Mount the Sconce

Mounting a wooden mason jar sconce on the wall.

Use wall anchors if not drilling into studs for secure installation.

Attach a sawtooth hanger to the back of the board.
Mount onto the wall at the height you prefer.

For renters:
Use strong, removable strips rated for the weight.
